During the second half of 2020 we have seen that countless technological products accelerated and exponentially derived from the crisis that we are all facing. This has meant that organizations have had to adapt and even reinvent to survive to this unprecedented situation.
Companies are increasingly focusing on flexible work schemes, as well as health and wellness programs for its employees. For all this to work, it is essential to have effective leaders who, in addition to assuming their managerial role, genuinely demonstrate that employees are their highest priority by serving their personal and emotional situations.
In my professional career, I have been fortunate to work with excellent leaders who have demonstrated outstanding mastery in administrative, technical and human skills. However, those who have left their mark on me the most, have these characteristics which I conceptualize as elements of a leadership competence that could be called « Human Sense »:
• Do they have a purpose
• They are humble
• Show compassion
• They are empathetic
Jacob Morgan (« The Future Leader » 2020), define 5 qualities of Leaders with Purpose and Kindness: 1) They achieve commitment to all employees, 2) They practice Empathy and Self-awareness, 3) They have a cause they fight for, 4) They see employees as humans, and 5) They choose to be purposeful and caring.
In humility, several qualities of a leader can be integrated: showing himself as a human being, vulnerable, open to listen and willing to unlearn to learn from the people around him, is respectful and respected by people, inspires trust and is someone focused at the service of others.
According to Rasmus Hougaard and Jaqueline Carter (“The Mind of Leader” 2018), compassion is the intention to contribute to the happiness and well-being of others. A compassionate leader has a genuine interest your people not only deliver results, but prosper. Therefore, compassionate leadership requires having the wisdom to lead for the greater and long-term good.
Very important is empathy, which means understanding feelings, emotions and experiencing in an objective and rational way what another individual feels; even though in many cases it is classified as a « soft » ability, cI agree with the opinion of Steve Browne (“HR Rising !! – From Ownership to Leadership” 2020) that empathy is a business skill, since it is present throughout the organization in each of its leaders.
2020 is about to end; It will depend on each person to take the role of victim in that it was a negative and pessimistic year, or to assume a leading role of being a leader capable of capitalizing on the opportunities that were presented, learning from experiences and becoming a Leader with Meaning. Human.
